The red squirrel has seen a major decline in numbers within the UK,

Ireland and Italy of the last 50 years,

in part due to the human introduction of eastern grey squirrels.

Grey squirrels have different eating patterns that

disrupts the food source for reds and sometimes carry diseases that,

although not fatal to them, are often fatal for red squirrels.

Numbers are now increasing due to concerted conservation efforts.

近五十年來,歐亞紅松鼠的數量在英國 愛爾蘭和義大利有顯著的下降趨勢,

有一部份是由於人們引進東方灰松鼠.

灰松鼠有不同的飲食模式以致於破壞歐亞紅松鼠的食物資源而且有時灰松鼠會傳播疾病,

雖然不會對灰松鼠造成致命,但常常是歐亞紅松鼠死亡.

因為有齊心協力的保護下,歐亞紅松鼠的數量有回升當中.
